For many women, turning 40 can feel like a pivotal moment, especially when it comes to fitness and health. But the truth is, it’s never too late to start exercising and getting fit. In fact, beginning a fitness journey in your 40s can lead to numerous health benefits, both physical and mental. Here’s why now is the perfect time to prioritize your well-being and get moving.
The Benefits of Starting to Exercise in Your 40s
Improved Cardiovascular Health
Regular exercise helps strengthen the heart and improve circulation, reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Women in their 40s can significantly lower their chances of developing heart disease by incorporating activities like brisk walking, cycling, or swimming into their routine. I aim to run at least four times a week.
Increased Muscle Mass and Bone Density
After 40, women start to lose muscle mass and bone density, which can lead to a higher risk of osteoporosis and fractures. Strength training exercises, such as weight lifting and resistance bands, can help build and maintain muscle, while also promoting stronger bones. There is an outdoor gym in the park near my home, and I use it (for free!) three times a week.
Boosted Metabolism and Weight Management
As metabolism slows with age, many women struggle with weight gain in their 40s. Regular exercise, particularly high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and aerobic activities, can rev up your metabolism, helping to burn more calories and maintain a healthy weight.
Enhanced Mental Health and Mood
Do you ever wake up with low mood? Try going for a morning run or walk. Exercise is a natural mood booster, releasing endorphins that reduce stress and anxiety. For women facing midlife changes, staying active can improve mental clarity, boost confidence, and alleviate symptoms of depression.
How to Get Started
Set Realistic Goals: Start with small, achievable goals, such as 30 minutes of activity, 3-4 times a week.
Find What You Enjoy: Choose activities you love, whether it’s dancing, yoga, or hiking, to stay motivated. I love running, especially outdoors. I look forward to my runs and feel great afterwards!
Seek Support: Join a fitness group or find an exercise buddy to stay accountable and make the journey more enjoyable. Group classes at gyms are a great way to stay fit and also to make new friends.
Over 40? Now is the time to get fit and prepare your body (and mind) for the years ahead!
